Thanks Chris. Had just read it a few minutes ago and confusingly recent discussions on the Apple Support pages where people are discussing this with people quoting (or maybe misquoting?) Apple geniuses which contradict the basic Apple advice. But I think I now understand that the lithium-ion batteries last for between 500 and 1000 cycles and a cycle is not every time one plugs the notebook into the mains even if its not discharged to 3%. If one recharges at 50% that's only half a cycle and the notebook remembers that so if one recharges again from 50% then that makes one cycle.
