Hi Andrew

Yes a bigger drive would be much better for backing up. Time Machine creates a 
lot of dated variations of files, so you do need minimum 1.5x more space for 
backing up than the capacity of your drive.

Time Machine should be deleting older backups to make space, but it'll always 
keep the original versions of any of your files (and the latest). If there's 
not enough space on the drive to add new files, you'll get an error when 
backing up.
