876,000 here on a 6-month-old MacBook Air. Don't forget that Sophos will probably check EVERY file on your computer, including all the programs and operating system files. My Mac Pro has around 1.3 million files on it.

Just checked my Macbook Air (18 months old) mainly surfing and wordprocessing. 451,000 files. Used Disk Utility to do that. Have you repaired permissions recently?

I've installed Sophos antivirus on my iMac, running 10.5.8, and when I went to do a scan it started the scan but advised me that there were
over 670,000 files to scan!! Is this normal? I use the machine only for word processing, storing about 200 photos and surfing the net. No music,
no games. What's the standard file count for a new, unused Mac?
Thanks for any info - John N
