To see the log-in screen is not too important I find, type the first letter
of the account you wish to login to, type in the password and press return
no clicking required.

Subject: [sussex_mug] MacBook Pro "Start Up"

Hi there...

I have the use of a 17" MacBook Pro (2.4GHz i7 running 10.7.5) for work.

Whenever I switch it on, the Log-In screen comes up with varying
brightnesses, sometimes too dark to see almost anything, most annoyingly the
mouse pointer to click on the log-in with!  This situation varies.  Why does
it happen, and how can I make sure that it always comes up with maximum or
at least non-varying brightness?

I suspect that there is somewhere a light sensor because the screen
brightness anyway varies at times.
