You're better off using IMAP over POP, it syncs mail with the server instead of just downloading & deleting it. Your POP accounts were probably set up when btinternet.com didn't support IMAP, before it had moved to being hosted by Yahoo.
Does your mother get an error message when downloading the email? A bit more information will help.
