Setting up an exchange account in mail uses no more server resources than a PC. 
I think they mean "will put too much strain on the IT department who don't know 
anything about macs".

Configuring an exchange account in mail is easy provided the exchange server is 
running exchange 2007 or higher. If it's 2003 then they really need to upgrade 
anyway!

If it's 2007 or higher, and you've got the domain, exchange server address, 
username and password, it should be simple to set up.
