Thanks to all for your thoughts but especially Sam who asked the blindly obvious question!
Rebooting the router first is my usual procedure but because my iMac, iPod and iPad were all fine I foolishly thought it was Chris's MacBook Air that was causing the problem. However, one Netgear and Airport Extreme reboot later all is fine again. :) I'll put my dunce's hat on now ...
