Does the mac boot normally into OS X? The windows partition should be visible 
on the desktop.

I wouldn't recommend running a virtual machine from an external drive, unless 
it's an ssd over usb3/FireWire the performance won't be ideal.

She might be better off putting a bigger hard drive into the laptop if she's 
pushed for space.
