My 4 year old 15" Macbook Pro has developed an issue where the sound doesn't work unless a headphone or speaker is plugged in. This happened intermittently with the sound coming back every now and again but now seems to be becoming more permanent and red light also shines out of the headphone socket.
When I go into system preferences it doesn't recognise an internal audio output. It does fix itself occasionally but it hasn't done so for some time. However the problem returns again as soon as a headphone / speaker cable is plugged in and unplugged again. Any ideas would be appreciated.
