this will be handy if people are planning to buy an external hard drive. Just enough data to make it worthwhile, not so much you drown.

The twitter version is 'don't buy Seagate drives, go for Hitachi or Western Digital' (in that order). Especially true if you're looking at higher capacities.

To me it's a no-contest. Any near-future spinning drives I get will be Hitachi, and Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 (Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630) 3TB has the best record (the 4 TB ones are to new to be sure, I think). And if I had a Seagate Barracuda, I would be ditching it (failures between 6 and 15% annually). If I was depending on a Seagate, I would be buying its replacement in the next month.
