Diana, I'm using Mavericks and iOS 8 and at least for Pages I can open docs created on a Mac and vice versa without problems. It also is working for realtime updating - seeing changes made on both as they take place.
I haven't invoked iCloud Drive as this doesn't work until Yosemite. This could be your problem?
