Dear Smuggers

I don't think I have ever been so frustrated with an Apple situation in my
life...What follows is the abbreviated version!

I got the cable some of you helped me identify for this old DVD-slot Mac mini.
It had 10.6 installed. I downloaded El Capitan to upgrade and got the
installation going. However, it stalled completely on restart and I didn't have
a back-up disk handy (there was nothing to back up in terms of files). So after
many false starts, I installed 10.6 again from the old DVD I had on my shelf
and started again. After the many updates in Software Update, I'm back at
10.6.8. I tried using an archived El Cap installer but it said it was
corrupted. So I went to redownload it and it says "You have updates available
for other accounts: To update this application, sign in to the account you used
to purchase it".

I've never had another AppleID, and this is a virgin install from a DVD after
erasing the disk so I have no idea what to do next. Any suggestions? I just
wish I had a backup from another machine but all I have is anoter 10.6 and
Sierra, which won't run on this machine.

I also tried running the installer on my Mac Pro (which will boot from 10.6)
but it says it won't run on this OS (ie Sierra).
What now?

cheers
J
