Hi Jason,

I use a 1TB one of these: https://uk.crucial.com/products/ssd/portable-ssds

Reformatted for Apple, Together with SuperDuper, I use it to back up my HD 
after every day. Can get a little warm when backing-up, but barely warm when 
not. 

Not a good idea to use (any backup disk) it as your only backup destination. 
The only guarantee with any HDD/SSD is that one day they will fail.
