Hurricane-Proof Glass
It's a familiar scene on television before any major hurricane, homeowners
using plywood to board-up windows, but a new kind a glass may make that
unnecessary. A University of Missouri-Columbia researcher has developed a
highly resistant fiberglass window panel for buildings in hurricane-prone
areas. "When a Category 3 hurricane hits with winds up to 120 mph, small
particles such as gravel can blow around at speeds of 60 miles per hour or
higher," Sanjeev Khanna, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace
engineering, says in a statement. The fiberglass reinforced window consists of
three layers -- two heat-treated glass sheets with a thin layer in the middle
made of polymer that is reinforced with glass fibers.
