I despise political correctness!  Besides, what good is a beauty pageant when looks aren’t a factor?

But it wasnt politically correct to just judge a woman on her beauty.....Although i think they should still judge it on looks.

Well, they have long been saying that the Miss America pageant was no longer about beauty, they sure proved that this year.  That chick is dog ugly.  <shaking head>  But tell me, what was wrong with it being a pageant based on looks?

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Reuters) - Miss Florida Ericka Dunlap, a 21-year-old aspiring lawyer from Orlando, was crowned Miss America (news - web sites) 2004 on Saturday at the climax of a three-hour televised beauty pageant that featured a bumper crop of brainy contestants.

A stunned Dunlap beamed at the cheering crowd in Atlantic City's Depression-era Boardwalk Hall as Miss America 2003 Erika Harold of Illinois placed the winner's rhinestone tiara on her head and sent her down the runway for a victory stroll.

"Her first words were basically hyperventilating," Miss America Pageant host Tom Bergeron joked as the newly crowned winner repeated the words, "Oh my God," again and again.

Dunlap, who wants to specialize in entertainment and sports law after studies at the University of Central Florida, will receive a $50,000 scholarship and a lucrative yearlong speaking tour to tout her social program of cultural diversity and inclusiveness.

First runner-up Miss Hawaii Kanoelani Gibson and second runner-up Miss Wisconsin Tina Sauerhammer will receive scholarships of $40,000 and $30,000, respectively.

Dunlap, the daughter of a Florida roofing contractor and a registered nurse, seized the title after winning the annual pageant's talent contest by crooning the inspirational anthem "If I Could."

She also succeeded in the evening gown competition wearing a luminous yellow strapless gown.

The 82-year-old beauty pageant, which saw its heyday as an American cultural icon in the 1950s, has struggled to remain relevant in recent decades amid changing social tastes and gender roles.

Television viewership has also slipped, reaching an all-time low of 12 million viewers last year.

Introduced to a national television audience on Walt Disney Co.'s ABC network on Saturday as "the largest women's scholarship competition in the world," the Miss America Pageant was rich with contestants marked by intellect, talent and unconventional roles for women.

Aside from two Harvard graduates and a 22-year-old physician, the lineup of contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia included a forklift driver, a tractor driver and a drag racer.

The winner was selected by a seven-judge panel that included Fox television anchor Greta Van Susteren.

Organizers sought to jazz up the evening's program by featuring a viewing party in Colorado, which was hosted by Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter of ABC's reality show "The Bachelorette." The evening also included a song performance by Clay Aiken of "American Idol."
