Award winning director Elia Kazan dead
NEW YORK -- Legendary Broadway and film director Elia Kazan died Sunday at his
home in New York at the age of 94. Kazan began his career as a Broadway actor
and he also wrote several best-selling books. But he was most widely respected
for his directing skills. HollywoodReporter.com reported. His directing career
began with Thornton Wilder's "Skin of Our Teeth" in 1942, for which
he won a New York Drama Critics Award. He was later hailed for directing
"Death of a Salesman" and "A Streetcar Named Desire" on
Broadway; the film "East of Eden" and the Academy Award-winning
"On the Waterfront." However, Kazan's reputation was haunted by his
contribution to the blacklisting of several colleagues in the Communist-hunting
1950s. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored Kazan with its
Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, reviving the decades-old controversy
surrounding his appearance before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
