Bob Hope Receives Posthumous Officers Award

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The Reserve Officers Association Minuteman Hall of Fame inducted comedian Bob Hope posthumously into its ranks on Saturday (Sept. 27).

The Hall of Fame honored the funnyman for over 50 years of entertaining military troops overseas.

Hope's traditional Christmas tours began in 1948, when he went to Berlin to entertain soldiers, according to the AP. In 1990, he made his final visit to troops during Operation Desert Shield.

Kelly, Hope's son, accepted the award at Saturday's banquet, saying that his father brought his talents to the troops to thank them for defending freedom.

Upon Hope's death in July, Edward A. Powell, President and CEO of the USO, said, "Through biting cold and intense heat, war and peace, and in the most remote and lonely locations, Bob Hope's mission was to put a smile on the face of every soldier, sailor, marine, airman, and coast guardsman who saw him."

Hope received numerous awards and honorary degrees in his lifetime, including the Medal of Freedom and an honorary knighthood in England.

Previous Officer Hall of Fame honorees include President Bush, John F. Kennedy and Harry S. Truman.

Hope died July 28 of pneumonia just months after the country celebrated his 100th birthday.
