'Shameless Indecency' Being Changed

Seventy-five new sexual offenses are being considered by the Law Commission in Scotland. The new code, including 12 new gender neutral sexual offenses, will sweep away a system based on old laws and judgments -- many that came under the heading of "shameless indecency" for sexual crimes between men, reports the Web site Scotsman.com. Rape against men is recognized in England and Wales, but in Scotland the offence is covered by the charge of "sodomy without consent," which carries a maximum prison sentence of two years. "Criminal law should have no distinctions based on sex or gender," says Professor Chris Gane, of Aberdeen University. "Male rape is as serious a crime as the rape of a woman."
