Ben Franklin: "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt, they have more need of masters." -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Charles Sent: Friday, October 03, 2003 1:20 PM To: 'The Sandbox Discussion List' Subject: [Sndbox] DEFENDS RUSH LIMBAUGH BLACK CITY COUNCILMAN DEFENDS RUSH LIMBAUGH AGAINST RACISM CHARGE CRITICIZES NAACP'S RACIAL AGITPROP WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Black Republican Vernon Robinson, a two-term member of the Winston-Salem city council, is publicly defending Rush Limbaugh in the Donovan McNabb controversy. 1 "In expressing his personal opinion that McNabb is over-rated," said Robinson, "Rush Limbaugh was doing only what dozens of other sports commentators do every day of every season in every sport. Rush simply added his own speculation that the reason McNabb enjoys an inflated reputation among sports commentators is the liberals', 'We gotta have more black quarterbacks' campaign. Nobody has yet explained to me how that is supposed to make Rush a racist." "Maybe McNabb is over-rated, and maybe he isn't," said Robinson, "but it is absurd to call Rush Limbaugh a racist just because he thinks this clamor for more black quarterbacks might be the reason." "Anyone who follows football at all knows that the syndrome Rush has referenced is very much alive and well. Every time an NFL owner hires a white coach, here comes Johnnie Cochrane threatening to sue, claiming white racism. It's just plain silly. The value of some of these football franchises approaches a billion dollars. NFL owners are going to hire the man they think is the best shepherd for their billion dollar investment no matter what color he is. And in all the years of complaining about NFL owners, not once has anybody named an NFL owner who is supposedly racist. Not once." "I've been listening to Rush Limbaugh on the radio nearly every day now for 15 years, and he has never once uttered a single racist phrase in all of that time, even in jest," continued Robinson. "The people bringing these specious allegations and demanding that Rush be fired are the same whiners and malcontents who demand reparations for slavery, and who try to excuse every failure of black Americans as a CIA plot." "Seven out of every ten black children born in America today are born out of wedlock. There are more black males of college age in prison than in college, and the top two causes of death among young black males are AIDS and murder. These issues are far more important to America's black population than whether some multi-millionaire football player is getting an easy ride on the sports page because he's black." "If the NAACP were truly interested in advancing the interests of America's blacks, it would be working with me to solve these real problems instead of trying to find bigots and racist bogeymen behind every tree. Calling Rush Limbaugh a racist does nothing to advance the interests of America's blacks. All it does is defame a great American and fan the flames of racial animosity. This classic racial agitprop is exactly the reason the NAACP has lost all credibility with the American public. If it truly wants to advance the interests of colored people, the NAACP should join me in convincing young blacks to stay in school, out of crime, and away from drugs, and to be responsible and moral in their sexual behavior." "For the last 16 years Rush Limbaugh has fought the extreme liberal bias in the news media by exposing the hypocrisy of the Left, and the idiocy of their ideology; this is simply their way of trying to strike back. They've targeted Rush because he has almost single handedly balanced the liberal media bias with the truth." [Robinson, who has been compared to Rush Limbaugh by the Davie County Enterprise-Record, is a candidate for Congress in North Carolina's 5th District. Queer Notes called Robinson "Helms redux' and The Winston-Salem Journal summed up Robinson's campaign by saying, "Jesse Helms is back! This time he's black." The Wall Street Journal called Robinson "the next black GOP Congressman" and UPI called Robinson "the early favorite to replace Congressman Richard Burr." The Fox News Channel called Robinson a "Rising Star", "the next J.C. Watts", and "the new face of the Republican Party." In recent years social commentators have claimed that the relatively small number of black quarterbacks and black coaches in the NFL is a sign of white racism. Others have argued that such allegations are baseless, and have caused sports commentators to be less critical of the failures of black quarterbacks and coaches, and to inflate the reputations of those who are enjoying some measure of success. Referencing this field of discussion, Limbaugh suggested that one reason for McNabb's inflated reputation might well be this very tendency on the part of sports commentators to exalt and overplay the successes of black quarterbacks. This led to charges of racism by prominent liberals, and calls for Limbaugh's termination by the NAACP and Democrat Presidential candidate Wesley Clark, among others. Limbaugh has resigned. # # # ------------------------------------ ________________________________ Changes to your subscription (unsubs, nomail, digest) can be made by going to http://sandboxmail.net/mailman/listinfo/sndbox_sandboxmail.net ________________________________ Changes to your subscription (unsubs, nomail, digest) can be made by going to http://sandboxmail.net/mailman/listinfo/sndbox_sandboxmail.net
