Now I think around here in the case of going out of town for a couple days
you can do, you just have to write a note in advance explaining why they
will be absent and then get all their work to have turned in when they get
back....or at least some work to do.

Yup. When I was a kid, sometimes we'd take time off to visit
grandparents or something and the school never made too much of a fuss.
They gave me the homework to do and my parents made sure I did it.
