The onetime Enterprise (news - web sites) chief and his wife of just three years, Wendy Neuss Stewart, have filed for legal separation, his publicist confirmed Tuesday.

No word on what caused the split.

The couple have no children. Stewart has two grown children from a previous marriage.

Captain Picard and his lady headed to the altar in August 2000, after dating for six-plus years.

Stewart, 63, and Neuss, 45, met on the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation where she was a production assistant. They got engaged in 1997.

At the ceremony, Stewart's faithful Trek sidekick Brent Spiner (news), aka Data, served as best android, er, man, and several other Enterprise crewmates were in attendance.

It was Stewart's second try at boldly going where many men had gone before. His first marriage to Sheila Falconer ended in 1992 after 24 years and two children, Daniel, 30, and Sophie, 25. It was Neuss' first trip down the aisle.

In addition to the Star Trek franchise, Stewart's also made a name for himself as the X-Men's Professor Charles Xavier in the series' first two installments and is already in talks to star in X3, scheduled for a May 2006 release.

Stewart's also lending his voice to the animated feature Racing Stripes opposite Frankie Muniz, scheduled for release in 2005.

But first he'll head to Broadway on October 24 in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker. He also just guest starred on an episode of Frasier as a potential gay love interest for everyone's favorite radio shrink.
