LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The saga of the Kennedy family has been portrayed dozens of times in feature films and TV movies, but ABC is going a step further to develop a weekly drama series about the political dynasty.
"The Kennedys," which will be produced by ABC's sister studio Touchstone TV and Tollin/Robbins Productions ("Smallville"), which has a deal with Touchstone, will follow multiple generations of the Kennedys. The show will begin with John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1959. "America's fascination with the Kennedys is boundless," executive producer Brian Robbins says. "This series will reach beneath the headlines to explore the forces that still captivate a nation." The show is the second Kennedy-inspired drama to get a green light this fall. "Jack and Bobby," a show about two teen brothers -- one of whom is destined to become president -- is in the works at The WB, with Greg Berlanti ("Everwood") and Thomas Schlamme ("The West Wing") executive producing. ABC's show, however, will track real events in the lives of Boston fixer Joseph Kennedy and his clan, beginning with the 1960 presidential campaign. It will continue through JFK's years in the White House, when Robert Kennedy served as attorney general. Whether it includes all the sordid things that went on behind the scenes in the Kennedy White House remains to be seen. "The promise of this show -- the reason it excites us so much -- is that it allows for both micro and macro stories: the intimate dynamics of family against the backdrop of events that shaped the country," ABC Entertainment President Susan Lyne says. Peter Buchman ("Jurassic Park III") will write the pilot script and serve as an executive producer with Robbins, Mike Tollin and their partner Joe Davola. ________________________________ Changes to your subscription (unsubs, nomail, digest) can be made by going to http://sandboxmail.net/mailman/listinfo/sndbox_sandboxmail.net
