Cocoa Bean Fertilizer May Harm
Dogs
Chocolate can poison a dog and a study by the American Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals finds cocoa bean shell mulch fertilizer can make dogs ill. Dogs that come into contact with the fertilizer exhibit signs, such as vomiting, consistent with methylxanthine toxicosis -- similar to those seen with chocolate poisonings. "The ASPCA advises pet owners that they should avoid using this fertilizer around unsupervised dogs, and dogs with indiscriminate eating habits," says Dr. Steven Hansen, senior vice president of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
