No Nicknames

A plaque honoring a janitor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina is being described as racist and offensive because it uses his nickname instead of his given name, reports the Gold and Black, the student newspaper there.

The plaque honors janitor Tom Jeffries, who worked at the university for 40 years before his death in 1927. He was known as “Dr. Tom” by everyone on the campus when he lived.

Protestors said the plaque’s use of his nickname instead of his full name is dehumanizing and a “daily insult to Mr. Jeffries and every other person of African descent” on campus.
