IMDb MOVIE OF THE DAY

Director Philip Saville and writer Maggie Wadey's 1995 adaptation of
Edith Wharton's "The Buccaneers" was unfortunately overlooked by much of
its target audience when it first aired, due to the frenzy surrounding
another TV miniseries that debuted that year -- Andrew Davies' 1995
adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". The two miniseries do
have their similarities: created by classic female writers, both are
based on novels which focus on the trials and tribulations faced by five
young women as they attempt to navigate the intricacies of proper
British society. But compared to Austen's sparkling characterizations
and slyly witty commentary, a miniseries centered on Wharton's darker
look at the business of upper class marriages and the money that
inspired them, just wasn't as effortless for TV audiences to digest.
Despite its faithfulness to Wharton's tone and meticulous recreation of
the costumes and settings of the time, Wadey's adaptation of the story
was attacked by some critics for being too "Americanized", saying that
she had fabricated a sensational and happy ending to the story -- an
ending which was actually based on outlines written by Wharton herself
just before her death (the novel was never actually completed).
Regardless of such critical quibbles, the performances of then
up-and-coming actresses Mira Sorvino (who would soon win an Oscar for
Mighty Aphrodite) and Carla Gugino (superb as the free-spirited Nan) as
two of Wharton's young American women whose beauty and wealth help them
take London by storm, make "The Buccaneers" eminently compelling
viewing. - Heather Campbell
