Tiny Hard Drives to Offer More Storage Capability
In 2004, new sub-1-inch drives will hit the market that offer more storage space than previous drives. These drives may be popular among people who have mobile devices such as handheld digital video players, MP3 players, cell phones, etc.
Such devices will have disk drives and Toshiba is set to roll out sub-1-inch hard drives this January. Toshiba joins others in developing drives with 0.8-inch or 0.7-inch diameter platters which are small compared to the iPod's 1.8 inch drive.
Some hard drives will be cheaper than flash memory cards. PC World reports that the cheapest 1GB flash memory card is $250. 1GB microdrives start at $159. The only drawback is that higher capacity microdrives cost more than flash memory cards.
