Cool...it's good to know you can buy a virgin prepaid. The muslims will be
glad to hear that, cause that has to be better than dying for them. <G>

Seriously though, I can buy the argument of getting in touch with your
child...it's just that everyone I've ever talked to that bought a phone with
that idea has ended up paying through the nose for charges because a kid and
a phone are bad enough without per minute charges! I suppose pre-paid would
put a limit on that, but even then it just seems to me to be an unnecessary
expense. On the other hand pay phones are becoming more and more scarce.

I've checked into this one. It's a Virgin pre-paid. These minutes carry over
thankfully and you have 3 months to use what you put on. You have to "top
up" every 90 days, but can do it more often if you like. Our regular cell
phone companies around here suck so bad I won't even use them myself. We get
better coverage and prices on the pre paid. Also she won't be getting it
just to talk to friends on. They have also started coming to work with me
and this way if they don't come check in with me and I can't get away on a
break to go find them I can call and see where they are. Kinda like the
other day I had to take them with me and I was off work and searched all
over the mall and couldn't find them and the mall won't page people unless
it's a complete emergency. Which they didn't consider that to be an
emergency. Besides, my daughter very seldom asks for anything so I figure
when she does ask for something, I'll do my best to get it for her. Plus
like I mentioned, I'm also able to use it and if she lets her grades drop,
it's not hers anymore.

Yes, I know all of those arguments. I also know that when I was a teenager
my mother was able to keep very close tabs on me without me having a cell
phone. I watch the kids coming out of Brianna's middle school, and 90% of
them have a cell phone and a pager. It's ridiculous.

You better check the prepaid very carefully. Many of those prepaid plans
actually end up being more expensive than a monthly plan. Because the way
the work in our region is if you don't use all the minutes in the month you
lose them, and have to buy a new card to keep the number active.

I can add a third line to our package for $19 (some carriers are even
offering them for $9.99). Verizon (our carrier) also lets you restrict the
calls to a certain number (for example calls could only go to my handset or
911). But still, I just don't see the need for it. When she goes somewhere
that she might need it, she can borrow one of ours. But I just can't see a
kid having a cell phone just to talk on. It's foolish in my opinion.

This one is a prepaid cell phone....it could actually come in handy with me
working or being at school. Kinda like Monday, my brother picked them up
from school and was supposed to pick me up and take me to work and they were
running late. If she had the phone I could have called to make sure they
were ok. Not to mention, she will be "paying" for the time herself by doing
chores around the house. If the chores aren't done, she doesn't get the
card. Also if her grades slip, the phone comes to me.

Mine has mentioned a cell phone, but that's not happening. I don't think
children need a cell phone.

I don't even know what the hot holiday items are this year. My son asked for
games for his PS2 and my daughter asked for a cell phone.
