Dean says he can beat Bush
MANCHESTER, N.H., Dec 09, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The nine Democratic presidential candidates debating in New Hampshire Tuesday united in opposition to President Bush, rather than attacking each other.

But when the candidates were asked by moderator Ted Koppel to raise their hands if they thought front-runner Howard Dean, former Governor of Vermont, could beat Bush, only Dean raised his hand.

But Dean may have somewhat blurred his reputation as the most outspoken anti-war candidate by saying U.S. troops might have to stay in Iraq for years, in partnership with allied and United Nations forces. He made the statement even as he condemned the decision to go to war.

However, with former Vice President Al Gore endorsing him Tuesday, Dean appeared confident and assured. The state's largest union, that of public school teachers, also has endorsed Dean.
