UPN expanding prime-time hours?

NEW YORK -- Viacom head Mel Karmazin suggested Monday that he might try to expand the number of prime-time program hours on UPN. The network currently airs just 10 hours a week of prime-time programming -- two hours a night, Monday through Friday. The schedule includes the comedies "The Parkers," "Eve" and "Half and Half," as well as "Star Trek Enterprise" and "WWE Smackdown." Speaking in New York Monday, Karmazin said that it was harder to turn a profit with just 10 hours of programming to sell, and that he would take up the matter in January with CBS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Les Moonves. But Daily Variety reported that network insiders said they doubted UPN would be able to add a new night of programming by 2004.
