IMDb MOVIE OF THE DAY
Initially a Broadway smash hit in 1936, Clare Boothe Luce's play The
Women was seen by MGM as a perfect fit for film adaptation, well-suited
to studio executive Irving Thalberg's vision of developing literature
and plays for the screen. Not produced until three years after
Thalberg's untimely death, The Women finally made it to the silver
screen starring Norma Shearer (Thalberg's widow) and featuring
uncredited script work from literary masters F. Scott Fitzgerald and
Donald Ogden Stewart. True to its title, the film features an entirely
female cast, from superstars like Joan Crawford, Paulette Goddard and
Joan Fontaine down to the animals that appear in the ranch sequences
near the end. The story follows the exploits of a group of women who can
best be described as "ladies who lunch", centering on Mary Haines
(Shearer) and the ripple effect of her discovery that her husband is
having an affair with the devious Crystal Allen (Crawford). The
interactions between Shearer and Crawford (who were rivals off screen)
crackle with delicious tension, and Rosalind Russell's turn as gossiping
busybody Sylvia Fowler stands as one of the funniest, sharpest
