OTTAWA (CP) - The annual lobbying over the price of milk is reaching its climax, with the Consumers' Association of Canada saying it's time the dairy industry stopped milking consumers.
The Canadian Dairy Commission will soon announce pricing for 2004 under the country's supply management system.
The Consumers' Association says Canadian dairy producers get higher prices than their counterparts in other countries and are the best-paid farmers in Canada with a profit margin of 25 per cent - double the average Canadian farm and triple the average Canadian business.
Says association president Bruce Cran: "The current regulated pricing system allows dairy producers to collect an extra $100 per Canadian household this year."
