LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - While its annual awards may not receive the same

amount of press as the Nobel Prize, the Golden Globes or Time Person of the

Year, the National League of Junior Cotillions has unveiled its list of the

10 Best Mannered People of 2003. Leading this year's list is, quite

naturally, "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken.

The NLJC, the nation's only organization that trains and licenses directors

to establish local cotillion programs, honored Aiken for "his example of

humility and politeness." He beat out Oprah Winfrey on the list, but

naturally Aiken is too much of a gentleman to taunt.

This is the 12th year that the NLJC has paid tribute to the celebrities the

group feels best epitomize the virtues of ethics and etiquette that they

espouse. This year's list also includes Gen. Tommy Franks, Falcons

quarterback Michael Vick, surfer Bethany Hamilton ("for the manner in which

she handled the adversity of a shark attack"), Tony Blair, Mel Gibson, Tom

Brokaw, Laura Bush and last year's winner, Condoleeza Rice.

The list is generated by cotillion directors and participants nationwide.

Perhaps the group was trying to send a message to two-time runner up and

2000 winner George Bush, who may not have shown the French and the United

Nations sufficient manners at times this year.

"Clay Aiken of 'American Idol' fame was chosen because of the courteous

manner in which he treats fellow performers and fans," says Anne Colvin

Winters, the league's executive director.

Previous Best Mannered winners have included slugger Mark McGwire,

billionaire Bill Gates and Reginald Denny.
