Lessons available for pet whispering

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- Scientists at the University of Edinburgh have unveiled a course enabling pet owners to understand what their animals need, The Scotsman reported Friday. Once only the realm of Dr. Dolittle or horse-whisperer Robert Redford, the CD-based distance learning pack will provide pet owners with information on the fundamentals of animal behavior and how to cope with problems that arise. The courses cover a range of pets including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, horses, parrots and exotic species such as iguanas. Course organizer Dr Shirley Seaman said many people do not understand how their pets behave. "This course will help explain the fundamentals of animal behavior, how the behavior of companion animals is affected by the environment in which they are kept, and how this can lead to the development of problems." The companion animal behavior and welfare course was developed by experts from the Animal Behavior and Welfare Group at the University's Royal School of Veterinary Studies.
