Celebrity Chatter: Most Talked-About Events 2003
Some Star Moments We'd Like To Remember, Others Maybe Forget
Oh, what a year it was for celebrities. So
much so that Celebrity Chatter has compiled a list of the Top Celebrity News
2003. Here we go!
1. Michael Jackson Scandal: It appears the nation is split
on whether Jackson did or didn't do it. If you've been living under a rock,
Jackson is accused of molesting a boy and giving him alcohol at his Neverland
ranch. Jackson was charged Nov. 20 and cameras followed as he was escorted in
handcuffs into the Santa Barbara Sheriff's office.
In a "60 Minutes" interview with Ed Bradley, Jackson proclaimed
his innocence and told the interviewer that the police who arrested him treated
him unfairly. He showed photos of bruises and said his arm was dislocated due to
the handcuffs placed on him. He also said he will not live at Neverland again
and will only visit after his bedroom and other personal items were destroyed by
the 70 investigators who were sent to the home. The fiasco continues into 2004.
Jackson will appear in court to be arraigned on the charges Jan. 16.
2. Britney Spears and Madonna Kiss: A kiss between the Material
Girl and the Princess of Pop sparked water-cooler conversation around the
country. The moment happened during a performance by the duo along with
Christina Aguilera at the MTV Awards in September, but the big
controversy came when newspapers and television stations reprinted or
rebroadcast the kiss ad nauseum. The pair got exactly what they wanted, which is
tons of publicity. Madonna didn't get the press she wanted from her CD "American
Life" and with new up-and-comers on the pop scene, the Queen Mum of MTV isn't
the darling of the Billboard charts anymore. Britney hoped the naughty number
would change her good girl image. Thumbs down to whatever director decided to
have the cameras pan to Justin Timberlake's face during the kiss.
3. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's Non Wedding: Allegedly the
wedding of the century got called off when J. Lo and Ben decided it was just too
crazy to have three body doubles to throw off the paparazzi. But rumors ran
rampant that the cancellation was because of tabloid reports that Affleck had
been at Brandi's Exotic Nightclub in Vancouver and engaged in some
less-than-husband-to-be activity. Lopez stood by her man saying she knew he had
been at the club and that he did nothing wrong. No word on an impending wedding
date. Meanwhile, Affleck, who has been publicizing his new movie "Paycheck" with
Uma Thurman, says he and Jennifer are "very much together."
4. Meg Ryan's Lips: It was the talk of the Toronto Film Festival.
When Meg Ryan stepped out on the red carpet for the premiere of her erotic
thriller "In The Cut," she appeared to have larger lips. Although the actress
hasn't acknowledged the possible cosmetic enhancement, there is an
acknowledgement that "In The Cut" was meant to help change her good girl image.
Ryan suggests that she did the film to "shake things up." The film garnered
little critical acclaim, however.
5. Liza Minnelli and David Gest's Split: Who knew this wedding of
the century would break up (wink, wink.) Liza seems to be following in her
mama's footsteps in the man department. After a 16-month marriage, Gest and
Minnelli split. Then Gest filed a lawsuit seeking $10 million in damages
claiming that Minnelli seriously injured him during a drunken rage. Gest, 50,
said that he takes 11 prescription medications per day and lives in constant
pain because of injuries he suffered after Minnelli beat him on the head during
an alcoholic fit. Minnelli said she had hoped "the end of my marriage would be
handled with mutual respect and dignity."
6. Whitney Houston Claims Bobby Brown Hit Her: Bobby Brown was
arrested and charged with battery early in December for allegedly hitting his
wife, Whitney Houston, during a domestic dispute at their Georgia home. Houston
reportedly called 911 and suffered a cut upper lip and bruised cheek during the
incident.
Brown later turned himself into police. Brown's attorney said that the
couple hoped to work out the matter privately, but he will appear in court on
Jan. 7 for a hearing on the battery charge.
7. Will Demi Marry Ashton?: Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are
allegedly planning to wed on Valentine's Day in Las Vegas. The $1 million
extravaganza will take place in Las Vegas at their favorite haunt, The Bellagio.
They've become the couple du jour and Moore has given new hope to women 40 and
older everywhere after snagging the 25-year-old former Calvin Klein model turned
actor. In June, the couple went public with their romance on the red carpet of
the "Charlie's Angels" premiere and had chatter columns buzzing when they showed
up with Moore's ex-husband, Bruce Willis, in tow and their three
children.
8. Paris Hilton Sex Tape: Bootleg copies of Paris Hilton and
ex-boyfriend Rick Salomon's sex-capades made its way around the Internet in
November, giving Paris more publicity than she could have imagined for her Fox
reality show "Simple Life." Her parents threatened legal action over the tape,
which was shot three years ago when Hilton was 19 and Salomon was 30. He's the
ex-husband of Shannen Doherty. The buzz in Hollywood circles was that
Salomon may have leaked the tape.
9. Jessica Simpson's Brain Drain: Pop singer Jessica Simpson gave
blonde a new meaning when she told viewers around the world she didn't know if
she was having chicken or fish while she was eating Chicken of the Sea tuna on
an episode of her MTV reality show "Newlyweds." Another incredible ditzy moment?
Simpson wouldn't eat Buffalo wings because she believed they were made of
buffalo meat.
10. Kobe Bryant Accusations: Kobe Bryant's name put the small
resort town of Eagle, Colo., on the map after a hotel worker accused him of
sexual assaulting her in a hotel room June 30. Bryant hosted a press conference
in early July, where he held hands with his wife, Vanessa, who displayed a new
$4 million ring given to her by the NBA superstar. Bryant maintains the sex with
the 19-year-old hotel worker was consensual. He'll appear at another hearing in
Eagle on Jan. 23.
