It’s become a tradition for raunchy comedies to release unrated version on video. Usually, you can’t really tell the difference, but the American Pie movies have always distinguished their two versions. Pie 1 had an entirely different pie humping scene. Pie 2 noticeably extended scenes. Pie 3 has noticeably more bachelor party footage, extended scenes and an extra Stifler/Finch scene. There are some funny gags, especially references to Pie 2’s lesbian kissing scene, and more Stifler-isms. As usual, I prefer the theatrical cut because it’s tighter and better paced. So the unrated version is just a curiosity. Unlike the previous two films though, Wedding has both versions on one disc, so you don’t have to buy both (or ask to have both sent to you for free, if you are a DVD critic).

The disc is packed with extras that maintain the fun tone of the Pie movies, analyzing everything from Stifler’s dialogue to the bachelor party scene to the creation of Jim’s pubes. It’s kind of amazing to have such in-depth features on sometimes frivolous topics, and the behind-the-scenes footage definitely conveys how much fun everyone was having taking these things so seriously. Even the fluff piece on Nikki Ziering’s premiere preparations is fun.

There are lots of deleted scenes which are all interesting. The long lost dying grandmother subplot is finally presented. Stifler acts even more ridiculous. There’s more reference to previous Pies. There’s nothing you’d like to see back in the movie, but it’s a great assortment.

The outtakes are your typical flubbed lines, but because Seann William Scott is in them, they’re hilarious. He improvs extra sexual things and you’ve just got to laugh at how ridiculous he is, and how great he is at it.

The commentaries are great. Seann William Scott and Jesse Dylan spoof the typical boring commentary banter in scenes that Scott isn’t even in. People often try to do this and fail, ending up making just another boring commentary. But Scott is such a great improviser that he makes you laugh. Unfortunately, they run out of steam halfway through, but at least they acknowledge that.

The rest of the cast has a separate commentary and it’s not as good. It’s pretty much all banter, which reveals a little about the movie and shows a little bit of the group dynamic. It rambles a lot more than Scott and Dylan’s track because there’s more people trying to get in, but it’s okay.

Basically, American Wedding is exactly what you want in a DVD. Multiple versions of the movie, fun extra features, deleted scenes, outtakes and funny commentaries.
