In
Hollywood's early movie-making days, even the stars supplied their
own wardrobe for contemporary films. Period clothes were supplied
from stock, or by the Western Costume Company, established in 1912.
This remained the practice for most male actors and for all extras.
Anyone with a dress suit could earn extra money and higher status in
films of the 1920s.
