'Friends' ads going fast at $2 million

LOS ANGELES -- Thirty-second ads on the "Friends" finale are selling for a record $2 million for the U.S. prime time TV event, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday. NBC, which will air the 10-year-old series' final show on May 6, is expected to earn $70 million from advertising revenue that night. The per ad rate of $2 million has set a new record for prime time advertising, coming in just under the $2.3 million per 30-second commercial rate for the Super Bowl. Prime time television has not been this excited about episodic TV since NBC aired the final "Seinfeld" episode in 1998, when 30-second ads cost $1.7 million each. More than 30 million homes are expected to tune in to bid the cast goodbye, resulting in a high ratings sure bet at a time when network TV audiences are declining. For those advertisers with tighter purse strings, NBC will air an hourlong "Friends" highlights show in the time slot preceding the finale, which offers 30-second ads at the low rate of $1.25 million.
