Kick open the coffin and pour yourself a fresh cup of embalming fluid: The fourth season of HBO's funeral-home drama, ''Six Feet Under,'' will unearth all sorts of new funkiness. ''In a lot of ways, it's a funnier season than our first three,'' says series creator Alan Ball, ''but in other ways it's even more upsetting and grueling. People are experimenting with new things in their lives.'' Claire forges intriguing relationships with fellow art students (including one played by Mena Suvari). ''There's a lot of guerrilla art-girl energy,'' he says, ''a lot of burgeoning female sexuality.'' Nate (Peter Krause) is in the throes of a nihilistic, surreal struggle after losing his wife, Lisa. ''She's dead, but she's not gone,'' hints Ball.

Meanwhile, David (Michael C. Hall) and Keith's relationship ''surprises, delights, and dismays.'' Keith lands a personal-security job in Hollywood (one client: a singer played by Michelle Trachtenberg); Brenda ponders a career change; Ruth has much to learn about the man she impulsively married (James Cromwell's George); and Ellen DeGeneres pops up as herself. If that's not enough to entice, Ball promises this: ''In every single episode, there's some big entertaining or hilarious or hot sex -- and everybody's involved.'' (June)
