Soap Operas Hit Cell Phones

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (UPI) -- Soap opera is about to hit cell phones in the United Kingdom and Germany. Dutch production company Media Republic already delivers two daily episodes of "Jong Zuid," or "Young South," in cartoon-like sequences with text about sex, drugs, glamour and rocky relationships to Dutch cell phones for $1.40 a week. British and German versions will be based in London and Berlin respectively, featuring local actors and celebrities, but the basic story line will remain the same.

Delivered via Microsoft's MSN Messenger and cell phone operator Telfort BV, the episodes also appear on MSN Online. Media Republic Creative Director Douwe Dirks says the soap is one of the first third-generation applications that could net a large audience. So far, cell phone content offered has "mainly been soccer highlights for guys." MMS soaps targeting male audiences are also in the works. Over 30,000 Dutch subscribers have signed on for "Jong Zuide" since its launch last August.
