Here is a consideration.   I am running EWall as an SMTP proxy. You can put it on a separate box and use it with any mail server.   It offers a path to integration with off the shelf anti virus products (not per email box, etc). and it allows you to apply multiple "rules" to mail on Global, Domain, and User levels.   Price is more than reasonable. In fact, when used with various "free" server products, they offer a special license. (Mail Enable, XMail, Argosoft, etc).   See http://sssolutions.net for specifics. Trial version available.
