Can't speak to configuring WL5.1 for HTTPS. You could put it behind a web
server that supports HTTPS (iPlanet WS, for example). I set up Apache SOAP
in ATG Dynamo behind an iPlanet web server and HTTPS worked fine for me.
Client SSL configuration instructions are in the Apache SOAP docs. This doc
talks about setting up SSL on Tomcat, but also discusses how to enable it in
the client.
