Some of the basic benefits are:

-Just about any client-side programming language can be use. This means that
you can build SOAP requests into your existing infrastructure

-SOAP (over HTTP) is easy to get through firewalls.  This can significantly
reduce the implementation cycle in corporate networks.

-SOAP can be integrated with many server side technologies (CORBA, .NET,
EJBs, etc)through SOAP servers that translate the SOAP request into the
native protocol (e.g. SOAP client to IIOP).
