i am trying to invoke the stockquote service from my client but I get back
the following fault code from the server:

  Fault Code = SOAP-ENV:Server
Fault String = Exception from service object: Content is not allowed in
prolog.

Any idea what is causing this? Also, where do I get explanations for what
each fault means?

That article seems lacking regarding setting up the client environment.
Follow the instructions at

http://www.scottnichol.com/apachesoapinstall.htm#apachesoapclient
