Steve, Regards to a relocation to Orlando - There are a lot of thermal pilots around central Florida and a very excellent club in Orlando the Buzzards. The Tangerine meet is put on by them and is a great time on the thanksgiving weekend. There is an active circuit of contests from Ocala to West Palm Beach and we fly year around. The power clubs are many and some are very large. I am a member of the Buzzards and Indian River Control Society (IRKS). IRKS has 180 members and is primarily power but we do three sailplane events each year and have a winch and retriever. Events in the club usually draw about 20. Buzzards do four contests plus the Tangerine and have about 45 members. Slope soaring is not as good. Slopes here in Melbourne are on the beach and are called condominiums. With a decent east wind, which happens often, you can have a good time but combat is not possible for safety reasons. I did my LSF 2 flight with my trusty DAW 1-26 2 meter and am looking to go for level 3 as soon as I can get two friends to spend a few hours on the beach with me. I have had lots of fun soaring with the pelicans. I must admit to some close in aerobatics when kids show up on a balcony to watch! (I do try to be careful and only use HLG planes or the soft foamy.) It is also nice that the DAW is well sealed as a surf landing can happen! Florida has all sorts of model events, clubs, fields and manufacturers. It isn't California but there is lots to like. Real estate prices are sorta reasonable also. Best of luck on your decision, Jim MacLean Melbourne FL ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
