Scobie. . .I really doubt there has been time and circumstances for any
modelers to install the RDS system in new open class F3B/F3J type
structures. I would expect that this forthcoming building season would
present the first opportunity. Since the servos go in at a 45 degree angle,
any pre-cut openings for conventional servo mounting could not be used.
Retro-fitting requiring additional cutting and possible weakening of molded
or ARF wings would not be advisable for extreme aircraft. Rather, servo
openings and mounting would have to be pre-planned specifically for use
with the RDS.
Bearing in mind that Hepperle's (sp) study established that 4 external
linkages, covered or not, accounted for 5 to 10% of the total drag of an
airframe should be good reason for sophisticated modelers to take a serious
look at the RDS. Also, engineer Steve Fujikawa's analysis, found at the end
of the main Instructions under http://www.bmi.net/propt/rds/ clarifies that
with appropriate bends, the torque and resolution of an aileron servo can
be amplified, even effectively doubled. Since servo power and resolution
are keys to precise control, this provides additional reasons to look into
the system.
With many modelers favoring the Volz Micro-Maxx, etc. servos, these servos
can't be presently used with the RDS, since there is no Splined Insert in
the package to interface the output gear and the Coupler. However, Mike
Volz is looking into producing a dedicated Insert and once that is
available, the door is open to use his servos with the RDS.
As it stands, I think the benefits of eliminating external hardware and
increasing effective torque and resolution with the RDS are yet to be
experienced by all but a few modelers. In fact, even as the inventor of the
system, I have had the molded couplers in hand just long enough to put them
in a couple of new bagged wing ships. Once learned, the old horn/clevis/rod
seems very archaic.
