I sort of wonder if this has anything to do it.  I can think of a similar situation at 
the local hobby shop.  The owner of this
particular shop can be very rude to newbies  and new customers.  I've seen him act 
this way lots of time, and in fact, I thought he
was pretty much an a**hole when I was a kid.  Once I started coming in the shop more 
often (and buying more stuff, of course), I
noticed that he seemed to sort of mellow out.  In fact, the guy will bend over 
backwards to satisfy the regular
customers....returns, special orders, matching prices, etc...all no problem.  I can't 
say that being like this is the best way to do
business, in fact, the only reason I kept going to the store when I was a kid was 
because there were no other shops that were
closer, but it is nice once you are an established customer.
