Not to take anything away from the awesome fun that I have had flying MOM in the midwest, the MOM itself may not be the only reason that interest has improved.
One of the classic studies in industrial management is an experiment with factory workers where lighting was slowly improved and an increase in production was observed. To validate the experiment, the testers slowly reduced the lighting. To their great surprise, productivity continued to improve. This and subsequent experiments bore out the fact that one of the factors to improving worker productivity (in addition or even in spite of working conditions) was an understanding by the workers that people were paying attention to them -- that they were not being taken for granted. In addition to seeking the ultimate contest format, it is worth considering the value of finding other ways to help convince participants (and potential participants) that it makes a difference to us whether or not they join in. It is possible that at least part of the value that moving to MOM has resulted from a sense by participants that their enjoyment makes a difference. It is very easy (even in a MOM environment) to create a sense that "we" have figured it out -- nothing new is needed.
