Gordy, I travel with Sportubes internationally and regular locks are OK. However, you have to be prepared to unlock Sportubes for inspection as you're checking in.
Also, Sportubes have gone up in price but there are a couple of people selling them on eBay for around $140 instead of the list price of $170.
