I mentioned to Lenny Keer that I was using Night-Ops on my Dragonfly and it
was a bit on the heavy side with the amp, 9v battery and 3 lights strips
(standard night-ops stuff). He said that a lot of the electric guys were
running the E-L amp off the battery pack. Sometimes a fresh charged 8-cell
pack can swamp the amp, but that goes away when the motor is started.
Sounded like a good idea. Now, I've got an amp made by Varad/RC-neon:

I believe I got it through Tower a while back - had to tell them that they
stocked it! The light rods (2) that come with this kit are not nearly as
bright as the night-ops light strips. The amp is also weaker - but weighs
just a few grams if you remove it from its case. I've been saving it for a
hand-launch or some such nonsense. I thought I'd try it to save some more
weight. When connected to the 8-cell pack, it powers 3 of the night-ops
light strips GREAT. Using the RC-neon amp and removing the 9v battery, I've
saved about 2.5 oz - and now the strips and amp weight less than 1 oz
altogether. Flew it tonight. Performance-wise, I can hardly tell that the
lights are there, a BIG improvement.
NOTE: The night-ops amp is far superior for any applications that require
the 9v battery.
