OK here is my 2 cents on this. Winches are fine. Winches are good. F3b rules have already set reasonable limits on winches in order to even the field there. I think it has worked great. BUT- the problem is not the winch! F3j has become popular because anyone can do it. It costs say $200 or so for your launching equipment. I know you can spend more, but that is bare bones with line for parctice AND competition! $2000 gets you the appropriate F3b winches, and to be honest that is just a start. You either have to have great friends (thanks east coast guys) or be rich yourself to get the winches. 1 winch does nto do it for a team...think 3-4! That cost of entry is what will be the death of F3j. People requirements are just as high with F3b as with F3j and with having to remove the equipment every round that makes it even mroe labor intensive. But I'll say again...the barrier to entry is $$$. Making winches the launching method will basiclly remove 90% of the competitors from the competition simply based on that. For club contests winches are fine, but for big contests with many competitors, hand tow is the way to go.
